In early 1949, he followed with his father to immigrat to Taiwan and learned the qin under HU Ying-tang. In 1962, David graduated from National Art Academy, Taiwan. Followed by musical studied abroad, he received his B.A. in composition from the University of Hawaii, and culminated his academic studies with the Ph.D. (with honors in ethnomusicology) from the University of California Los Angeles, where he also studied composition with Roy Harris, Henry Lazarof, and John Vincent.
