He was fond of the qin since his childhood. When he was thirteen, he learned it under YANG Zi-dong of Sichuan School. In 1921, he began to teach the qin. In 1954, he was appointed to the Music Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Arts as a specially invited research fellow.
