SU Wu was an ambassador of the Chinese Han Dynasty to the land of the Xiongnus<\/em>, who were at war with China. Because of his refusal to yield to the Xiongnus<\/em>, he was held captive and was exiled to the cold wilderness near the North Sea. During his nineteen years of captivity, he worked as a shepherd to make his living. At the end the Xiongnus<\/em> let him go back to China. The music makes use of the north-eastern style of yangqin<\/em> playing to help to symbolize the faithfulness and loyalty of SU Wu to his own country.<\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is a melody from the Inner Mongolia folk drama played by a female and a male person. The melody is sung in Inner Mongolia dialect and widely spread in the western area of Inner Mongolia. This kind of song is always accompanied by yangqin<\/em>. DING Xi-cai is a famous musician who has accompanied JU Xiu-fang to sing Fifth Brother to Graze Sheep<\/em> and become famous. The melody was then transcribed for the big yangqin<\/em> as a solo piece in 1950s.<\/p>

   The author’s idea of creating this pieces is to express the profound artistic conception of the masterpiece “Pipa Xing” by Bai Juyi, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty. The whole piece is divided into four sections: <\/p>\n

1. Jiangyue – Against the background of percussion music such as bells and drums, Liuqin uses kneading, scribing, belting, knocking and other techniques to play a deep free rhythm and a beautiful adagio. The charming scenery of “Dipping in the Moon” and the bright artistic conception of rippling blue waves and elegant boats are vividly depicted. <\/p>\n

2. Complaining – Under the background and symphony of the whole orchestra, Liuqin played a sad and painful melody. The tragic life experience of makeup and tears on the red railings. <\/p>\n

3. Troubled times – Under the background of the strong sound of the band, Liuqin demonstrated the battle scenes of the ancient battlefield “the silver bottle burst through the water slurry” and “the iron cavalry highlights the knife and gunshot” with highly difficult clip sweeping, octave jumping, and fast playing skills. Emotional ups and downs Ups and downs, high tides. <\/p>\n

4. Go away – This is a rendition of the theme, and the piece ends in transparent, clear overtones. The lingering reverberation means something meaningful.<\/p>\n

The prefix \u201cda<\/em>\u201d (big or grand) may refer to its formal structure. This piece was originally performed by HUA Yan-jun who is also called Ah Bing the Blind. The source of Ah Bing\u2019s music has always been puzzling to scholars and musicians. Ah Bing himself claims that it is one of the set tunes (qupai<\/em>) from the Taoist ensemble music repertoire and he elaborates on it and turns it into a pipa piece. So far there is no Taoist piece which can be verified as being related to this piece. It may very well be Ah Bing\u2019s own composition. This sanxian<\/em> piece was adapted from the pipa<\/em> piece. There are three sections: the first is rather soft and serene; the second is more involved which makes a contrast with the first; the third incorporates the melody of \u201cGeneral\u2019s Command\u201d (Jiang Jun Ning<\/em>, the suffix ning<\/em> may also refer to a form of ci<\/em> of shorter length, if it is so interpreted, the title could also be read as \u201cThe General\u201d) from the Shi Fan Lo Gu<\/em> (Variety of drums and gongs music) repertoire, using clear and strong rhythm.<\/p>
