He was born in Simao Township, Changsha City, Hunan Province, China, and later became a naturalized citizen of the United States, residing in New York City. After graduating from high school in 1975, he worked at the Beijing Opera Troupe in Wangcheng County. In 1977, TAN Dun was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he studied conducting and composition under the guidance of LI Hua-de, ZHAO Xing-dao, and LI Ying-hai. After completing his master&#8217;s degree, he was influenced by contemporary composers such as WU Man-chi, George Crumb, Alexander Goehr, Hans Werner Henze, John Cage, and ZHOU Wen-zhong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 1986, Tan Dun received a scholarship from Columbia University in the United States and studied under ZHOU Wen-zhong and Davidovsky. He obtained a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and was also influenced by experimental music composers such as Philip Glass, John Cage, Meredith Monk, and Steve Reich. In 1997, he performed his composition &#8220;Symphony: Heaven Earth Mankind&#8221; with Yo-Yo Ma and Jacky Cheung during the Hong Kong handover ceremony. In 2006, he was recognized as one of the ten influential Chinese people in the world. In 2008, he composed the music for the logo and award ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2010, he served as the Global Cultural Ambassador for the Shanghai World Expo in China. In 2013, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador by UNESCO. In 2017, he received the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale. In 2019, he assumed the position of Dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music in the United States.
