At the age of ten, he started to learn the <em>dizi<\/em>. When he was fourteen, he learned the <em>dizi<\/em> and <em>suona<\/em> from a monk who has returned to layman. Since that time, his performing art was higher and higher and won him many fame. In 1951, he was appointed to the Song and Dance Troupe of Tianjin as a solo performer of <em>dizi<\/em>, <em>guanzi<\/em> and <em>suona<\/em>. In the same year, he was selected as the representative of Chinese musicians to participate in the Prague Spring Festival in Czechoslovakia. Since 1953, he became solely a <em>dizi<\/em> performer. He has composed, arranged, and compiled many <em>dizi<\/em> pieces, including <em>Peace Dove<\/em>, <em>Birds in the Forest<\/em>, <em>Selling Vegetables<\/em>, etc. Most of his works has became the essential training materials of the conservatories and also be the common programme in concerts.
