ZHANG Hong-qiao of the Ming dynasty wrote the poem entitled Big River Running East and there are the lines as \u201cResentful be it that the sound of the time dropper so disturbing, Tonight there is no slumber for me\u201d. Later somebody used these lines to express the woe of the two planets in the milky-way because they have to wait as long as seven years for them to meet. Others say that it is a sigh over the flying of time. The main tune is yi fan, in the middle section the tune is changed to zheng xian and then back to yi fan again. Xijiang Yue (“Moon over the West Ri ver”) is a short qupai melody from the Chaozhou repertoire. Its mode is essentially sol-la-do-re-mi, with sol and re controlling the cadence points. Typical of Chaozhou form, Xijiang Yue is organized in a ‘beat-variation ‘ su ite, the opening section (touban, ‘head beat’) at very s low tempo (and repeated slightly faster), followed by a moderate\u00adtempo variation (erban, ‘ second beat’ ) in which there is nearly constant rhythmic movement (this technique known as cui, ‘ hastening’ ). The final variation (sanban, ‘third beat’ ) is a spirited abbreviation of the main melody in short eighth notes. Most characteristic of the Chaozhou sound\u00adideal is the strident, penetrating quality of the erxian fiddle, the lead instmment in the ensemble. This 1986 performance is of the Su family ensemble from Chaozhou, led by Chen Tianguo (son-in-law of the patriarch, Su Wenxian, and faculty member at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Guangzhou). Family ensembles are common in Chaozhou music making, a social factor which is reflected in the strong performance unity heard here.<\/p>

Zhaojun Yuan (“Lament of ZhaoJun”) is a very old instrumental piece in the widespread 68-beat form derived from the famous Baban (“Eight beat”). This Hakka version, which is similar to versions played in both Chaozhou and Cantonese music, follows the 68-beat form and is set in the iminor-sounding mode of sol-ti-do-re-fa, with do and sol controlling the cadence points. The melody is palyed twice, the second time slightly varied. The title, “Lament of ZhaoJun”, refers to the Han dynasty princess ZhaoJun, who was forcibly married into the norsthern Xiongnu tribe. According to the old story, she felt extremely sorrowful at having to depart from her people. Because cultural imagery such as this has occupied a central position in the aesthetic system of the Chinese arts, thei r images were often believed to be reflected in the music itself. As a result, tempo is s low and the mood grievous, requiring legato bowing and heavy portamento (sliding) on bowed string instruments. This four-piece ensemble, led by Rao Ningxin (zheng), is from the Hakka town of Dapu. Other members include Luo Dezai and Luo Lian.<\/p>
