He served as a judge for the Hong Kong School Music Festival, conductor of the South China Film Workers Association Orchestra, guest conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chinese Orchestra, advisor and guest conductor of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra, and advisor of the Hong Kong Junior Chinese Orchestra. YU Lin was born on April 17, 1925, in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China, with the birth name HUANG Yu-lin, and his ancestral home was Taishan, Guangdong Province. He graduated from the Guangdong Arts College with a major in music, studying under Mr. HUANG You-ti. He later settled in Hong Kong, and from 1953 onwards, he engaged in music design and composition for the South China film industry. He composed scores for dozens of films, including notable works such as &#8220;Lotus Picking Song&#8221;, &#8220;Wild Rose&#8221;, &#8220;Double Happiness&#8221;, &#8220;Midnight Melody&#8221;, &#8220;Thunderstorm&#8221;, &#8220;Su Xiaoxiao&#8221;, &#8220;Family Hatred&#8221;, &#8220;Dong Xiaowan&#8221;, &#8220;Startling Phoenix&#8221;, &#8220;Under the Eaves of Hong Kong&#8221;, &#8220;Xi Shi&#8221;, &#8220;Secluded Waters Separated by a Day&#8221;, &#8220;Silver Bus&#8221;, &#8220;Qu Yuan&#8221;, and more. Later, he also participated in composing music for television dramas at Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Limited. Some of the major TV dramas he worked on include &#8220;Going Up the Mountain&#8221;, &#8220;Folk Legend: San Xiao&#8221;, &#8220;Romance of the Western Chamber&#8221;, &#8220;Flower Washing Sword &#8220;, &#8220;Xiang Lin Sao&#8221;, &#8220;Big Sister&#8221;, &#8220;The Metamorphosis of the Silkworm&#8221;, &#8220;Butterfly Lovers&#8221;, &#8220;Meteor Butterfly Sword&#8221;, &#8220;Cantonese Heroes&#8221;, &#8220;Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain&#8221;, &#8220;Immortal Li Bai&#8221;, &#8220;Emperor Li Houzhu&#8221;, and others. He also composed the theme song &#8220;Great Virtue Shines in All Directions&#8221; for the Tian Tan Buddha at Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. In 1966, he composed the theme song &#8220;Secluded Waters Separated by a Day&#8221; for the film of the same name directed by ZOU Ji (lyrics by ZOU Ji, music by Yu Lin), featuring MIU Jin Fung as the lead actress. The song was dubbed by Vivian WAI Sau-han, and after gaining popularity for half a century, it received the &#8220;Lifetime Achievement Award&#8221; from the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH) in 2010.
