His ancestral home was in Tang county, Hebei province. He loved music and learned it by himself since his childhood. In 1957, he graduated from the secondary school and was admitted to the Song and Dance Troupe of the Geology Department of the People\u2019s Republic of China as a <em>dizi<\/em> performer. Since that, he has learned the essential performing art of music from his older colleague SONG Jun-feng. In early 1960s, he studied the harmony in the Central Conservatory. In 1963, He was transferred to the National Traditional Orchestra of China as the wind section head. In 1978, he was appointed as the national 1<sup>st<\/sup> class performer. His performing style is elegant, and the techniques are free and easy.
