XIAO Bai-yong<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n XIAO Bai-yong was born in March 1941 in Shanghai and his ancestral home was in Chaoyang, Guangdong province. He loved to play the erhu<\/em> and violin since he was young. In 1959, he was admitted to the attached school of the Shanghai Traditional Orchestra learning the erhu<\/em> under XIANG Zhu-ying. He was also instructed by the famous musicians LIU Ming-yuan, JIANG Feng-zhi, WEI Chung-loh and HE Bin. In 1963, he was selected to participate in the 4th<\/sup> Shanghai Spring Festival\u2019s national erhu<\/em> competition. He won the second prize and the outstanding new work performance prize. In 1979, he was appointed as the erhu<\/em> leader of the Shanghai Traditional Orchestra for more than twenty years. In 1987, he was selected and was appointed to be the national first class performer by the Central Cultural Department of China.
